What is Oil Pulling?
The oil pulling technique involves swishing around 1 tbsp. of cold-pressed, organic oil in the mouth for approximately 15 - 20 minutes. Following that, the oil would then be spit out (being careful not to swallow it), and the mouth rinsed with clean, fresh, lukewarm water. It is believed that the toxins in the mouth are pulled into the oil during the swishing process, and spitting it out results in the removal these toxic compounds. Oils used in oil pulling include sesame, extra-virgin olive oil, and coconut. The oils should preferably be organic and cold pressed. These oils contain essential fatty acids and antioxidants that are good for your gums and teeth.
How it Works
What is being drawn out is not only toxins from the mouth but from deep within crevices between teeth and gums and from within the many small tube-like structures inside the teeth, which can build up in those areas and are not usually being eliminated. But Oil Pulling goes even beyond this. Ayurveda recognizes the subtle energy properties of oils and the importance of the tongue with its connections to all the internal organs. Each area of the tongue is connected to a specific organ/meridian system. The Oil Pulling then stimulates these systems to naturally detoxify.
When and How Often Should I Be Oil Pulling?
It is best to do it first thing in the morning before anything goes into the mouth. When you first begin Oil Pulling, it is best to do it for at least 3 weeks straight. Thereafter, you can continue to do it everyday or as needed.
