Frequently Asked Questions
Do you charge for a consultation?
No, consultations are free, however, they are only for 15 minutes. Please try to have all questions ready prior to your appointment. If a more extensive conversation is necessary, please book an Educational Consultation; price listed.
I would like to wear my hair naturally, however, the majority of my hair is chemically treated. Will I have to cut all of my hair off down to the new growth?
Many opt to cut the chemically treated portion of their hair off (The Big Chop); however, there are ways in which to wear your hair during the transitional phase. You can get your hair trimmed slowly over time (slow cut) until the chemically treated hair is gone. For a more personal discussion about your styling options, please schedule a consultation.
Is there anything I need to do to my hair before I arrive?
We do ask that you come with your hair completely detangled from root to end. When hair is fresh out of extension, for instance, there may be tightness at the root where lint and build-up may have collected. You may first loosen the hair by saturating with water, conditioner and/or oil, gently separating and finger detangling the hair. Section the hair into four sections (center front to center back and ear to ear), combing, but preferably using a detangle brush, through your hair and either twisting, or if the hair is short, banding each of the four sections.
If you do not have the time (or the energy), we do offer a detangling service for an additional fee.
I want to loc my hair but have not decided which method to use, palmroll or interloc. How often would I have to return for maintenance for both methods?
For the palmroll method, I recommend that you return for wash, re-twist and grooming at least every 3 - 4 weeks. For the interloc method, I recommend you return for wash and re-tightening every 6 - 8 weeks. It depends on how quickly your hair grows and your desire for neatness.
Are there other options for starting Locs?
Yes, Sekai Natural Hair Gallery offers 7 different methods to Loc your hair.
Coil (Palmroll) Method
Same-day Palmroll Method
Interloc Method
Crochet Method (have also been refered to as the "twist and rip" method)
Two Strand Twists
Single Braids
Loc Extentions
Please make an appointment for a consultation once you have either chosen your desired method, or have narrowed your choices down to two possibilities.
How long does my hair need to be to have Loc Extensions installed?
Your hair should be at least 2 - 3 inches in length; the longer, the better.
Around how long does it usually take to install Loc extensions?
Depending on the length and thickness of the Loc extension, it can take approximately 10 to over 30 hours. A closer estimate can be determined during your consultation.
May I bring my children and/or friends with me to the salon?
Due to space constraints, we ask that you do not bring children unless they are being serviced. Also, please limit your guests to one if absolutely necessary.
Why doesn't my hair look exactly like the picture I brought in?
When a picture is brought in, as an example of how you would like your hair styled, please keep in mind that the photo is an inspiration. There are several different factors which go into constructing a style; hair texture, thickness, length, head shape, etc. We will make every effort to duplicate the desired style.
